Reflexology Techniques

Standard Reflexology

Reflexology is a non-invasive, natural holistic therapy. It is based on the concept that every organ and structure in the body is represented in miniature in the feet. The reflexologist uses therapeutic touch only to detect and treat any sensitive reflexes, no pills or potions are used. Reflexology combats stress inducing a deep relaxation which assists the body to throw off toxins and leaves the person feeling calm and relaxed. Although reflexology is mainly done on the feet, it can also be done on the hands, or a combination of both.

VRT or Vertical Reflexology

This is worked with the client standing up and can be particularly helpful for clients with neck, shoulder and back pain, plus many other conditions, bringing about a very rapid response. It can be used on its own or with a conventional treatment. It can be used with people unable to sit in a reclining chair.

Reflexology and Sub-fertility

Reflexology can assist the body to get rid of toxins it does not want, improve the circulation and thereby improving the nutrition and oxygen supply to all the body's cells. Research has shown reflexology can help with many gynaecological diseases – including dysmenorrhea, hysteromyoma, pelvic inflammation, cyst and mass, endometriosis, menstrual disorder, infertility and chocolate cyst (Hui Song, Nanjing Hospital). Clients report that their signs of pre menstrual tension have disappeared with treatment for infertility and that if they had irregular cycles they have become more regular and less painful. It can also reduce the huge amount of stress that fertility problems can cause. For best results it is recommended both partners are treated.

Reflexology and Pregnancy

This is a very important time for the mother to be and the developing baby, with huge hormonal, physical and emotional changes occurring.

Research has shown that regular reflexology treatments have been shown to reduce the length of time of the labour. With reflexology the average duration of the first stage of labour was 5 hours and the average second stage was 16 minutes, these results were described as "outstanding" when compared with the textbooks average of 16 - 24 hours for the first stage, and 1- 2 hours for the second.( Gowri Motha and Jane McGrath, London)

Clients have reported that many of their minor ailments associated with their pregnancies such as backache, nausea, itchy skin (cholestasis), swollen ankles, mood swings, tiredness, plus many others, have been relieved by the reflexology so making pregnancy a more wonderful time. Reflexology can also be used to prime labour after the 40 weeks are up, with the agreement of the midwife or doctor, and to relieve Pelvic Disorder Syndrome.

Reflexology works to complement orthodox maternity care.

Reflexology in Postnatal Care

Postnatally, reflexology has been reported to relieve many of the side effects of the birth itself, for example the possible discomfort following a forceps delivery or a Caesarian Section. Clients have found reflexology has also eased problems like constipation and oedema after the birth itself, as well as give them a much needed energy boost. clients report that having reflexology after the birth has enabled them to return to feeling "normal " sooner  so they have been able to enjoy their new baby more fully.

Reflexology and the Baby

Reflexology is very gentle, and non invasive, and parents have reported it has helped with tummy aches and headaches, positing and constipation, and to calm emotionally distressed babies. These techniques can be taught by a maternity reflexologist and used by Mum or Dad.
